Course description

1- WHAT ARE PERSONALITY DISORDERS?

Personality disorders are defined by experiences and behaviors that differ from social norms and expectations. Those diagnosed with personality disorders may experience difficulties with cognition, emotionality, interpersonal functioning, or impulse control. In general, personality disorders are diagnosed in approximately 60% of psychiatric patients.

Personality disorders are characterized by a persistent pattern of behavior that is generally associated with significant personal, social, and occupational impairment. Personality disorders are also inflexible and, in many cases, widespread, largely because such behaviors can be ego-syntonic (meaning the patterns are consistent with the individual's ego integrity) and are therefore perceived as appropriate by that person. Individuals with personality disorders are often unaware of their condition and, as a result, avoid seeking treatment. This behavior can lead to maladaptive coping mechanisms and can cause excessive anxiety, distress, or depression, leading to personal issues that impair psychosocial functioning. These behavior patterns are typically recognized during adolescence, early adulthood, or sometimes even childhood, and often have a widespread negative impact on quality of life.
