Personality disorders are defined by experiences and behaviors that differ from social norms and expectations. Those diagnosed with a personality disorder may experience difficulties with cognition, emotionality, interpersonal functionality, or impulse control. In general, personality disorders are diagnosed in @-60 of psychiatric patients.
Personality disorders are characterized by a persistent index of behavioral patterns that are usually significantly associated with personal, social, and occupational impairments. Personality disorders are also inflexible and common in many cases, largely understood by the fact that such behavior can be ego-syntonic (that is, patterns are consistent with the individual's ego integrity) and therefore perceived by that person as appropriate. People with personality disorders often do not have information about their condition and therefore avoid seeking treatment. This behavior can cause maladaptive coping skills and lead to personal problems that cause excessive anxiety, distress or depression and lead to a deterioration in psychosocial functionality. These behavioral patterns are typically recognized by adolescence, the onset of adulthood, or sometimes even childhood, and often have a widespread negative impact on the quality of life
